Rating:    A Helpful Resource

About the Book:  For any writer interested in publishing professional pieces in magazines or connecting with publishers for their books, The American Directory of Writer’s Guidelines is a helpful reference.  It provides information on the subject area focus and preferences of 1,600 writing outlets.  Especially good for the new writer, it is a reference that could save you time and help you target the right editor for your submission.  It is worth keeping in your writing library.

The book has its flaws.  The indexing in the back of the book could be stronger, especially when referencing sub-imprints of larger publishing houses.  Some guidelines are simply not edited; they read like a disjointed email because of the way they have been printed on the page.  Not all references include a link to the relevant web site when one could have easily been obtained.  Despite its weaknesses, this book of writer’s guidelines is good to have on hand.
